How It Works
The hours and minutes to decimal hours conversion follows this algorithm:
Total Hours + (Total Minutes ÷ 60) = Total Decimal Hours
Examples
- 8 hours 30 minutes: 8 + (30 ÷ 60) = 8 + 0.5 = 8.5 decimal hours
- 7 hours 45 minutes: 7 + (45 ÷ 60) = 7 + 0.75 = 7.75 decimal hours
- 1 hour 15 minutes: 1 + (15 ÷ 60) = 1 + 0.25 = 1.25 decimal hours
Why Use Decimal Hours?
Decimal hours make payroll and time management a lot easier. Instead of dealing with complicated conversions, you can just multiply the hours worked by the employee’s hourly rate to figure out their pay.
For instance, if someone worked 8.5 hours at $20 an hour, their pay would be: 8.5 × $20 = $170. It’s a simple way to skip the hassle of turning minutes into fractions.
