Private IP Address vs Public IP Address

A private IP address is a unique identifier that your router assigns to each device on your local network. It lets data move accurately between devices – for example, when your laptop sends a file to your printer or connects to your home server. Private IPs are also known as internal, LAN, or local addresses.

A public IP address, on the other hand, is assigned by your Internet Service Provider (ISP). This is the address that represents your network on the internet. It’s what the outside world sees when you browse online, host an email server, or set up remote access. You might also hear it called an external, WAN, or internet address.

When will I need my IP Address?

You’ll typically need your private IP address when connecting devices within your home or office network – like linking a database on one computer to another.

Since many routers assign IPs dynamically (which means they can change from time to time), it can help to set up a static IP address to keep connections consistent and avoid interruptions.
