Private IP Address vs Public IP Address

A private IP address is a unique identifier that your router assigns to each device on your local network. It lets data move accurately between devices, for example, when your laptop sends a file to your printer or connects to your home server. Private IPs are also known as internal, LAN, or local addresses.

A public IP address, on the other hand, is assigned by your Internet Service Provider (ISP). This is the address that represents your network on the internet. It’s what the outside world sees when you browse online, host an email server, or set up remote access. You might also hear it called an external, WAN, or internet address.

When will I need my IP Address?

You’ll typically need your private IP address when connecting devices within your home or office network, like linking a database on one computer to another.

Since many routers assign IPs dynamically (which means they can change from time to time), it can help to set up a static IP address to keep connections consistent and avoid interruptions.

Why doesn’t my private IP address show?

Most current browsers hide a device’s local address from websites, for privacy. Your public IP address still shows. To see the private address, use the Windows steps in the next answer.

How do I find my private IP address in Windows?

Open the Start menu, type Command Prompt and open it. Type ipconfig and press Enter. Your private IP address is the IPv4 Address under your network adapter, for example 192.168.1.12. Our guide to finding the IP address of your TimeClick server shows each step.

Which IP address does TimeClick need?

The private (internal) IP address of your TimeClick server computer, the one with the gray TimeClick icon. Workstations reach the TimeClick database over your network with that address. Run ipconfig on the server computer and enter its IPv4 address when you set up a workstation.

Can my IP address change?

Yes. Routers usually hand out private addresses that can change when a device reconnects, so it helps to give your TimeClick server a static IP address. Your public IP comes from your internet provider and can change too, unless they give you a static one.
